The Rotary Club of Abuja Gudu has trained 15 women of Ruga Fulani community on soap, cream and disinfectant making.
Two community members also received two years training on mechanical engineering at Ugo Automechanic Store.
At the event in Abuja, the President, Chinelo Audrey Ofoegbunam, said the club carried out the intervention because most community members had no means of survival.
`We taught them on how to make a living, and not just that, we gave them start-up materials to set up their business.’
`We have trained 15 women in soap making, disinfectants, hair cream, etc, they were excited as they have even started passing the knowledge gained to those that were not part of the beneficiaries.’
`We also sponsored two men to learn the basics of mechanical engineering for a certain period and we intend to continue to pay to do this in the next few years’’.
She said “the intervention was necessary as entrepreneurial skills’ development was the only way to sustain efforts of philanthropic organisations to make an impact in community.”
`Again, we gave out one sowing machine to a trained tailor who did not have the means to get it.’
The president said that through a member, Rotarian Amwe Raphael, the club had commenced the installation of electricity (Solar) to the community, with support from the Rural Electrification Agency.
“With support from the Rural Electrification Agency, we have received donation of five light coordinates and mounting of poles. The entire installation for the light would be completed by the coming week’’.
The Community Service Director, Rotarian Mundong Dachi said “this intervention was necessary as the women and men do not need to wait for handouts when there is a need for the basics like feeding, etc’’.
The Vocational Service Committee Chair, Rotarian Kelechi Udenwa, said the theme, “Project Empower and Light up Ruga-Gaduwa”, within the area of focus- Economic and Community Development was borne out of the need to have the community empowered.
The Rotary Club of Abuja Gudu, had adopted Ruga Fulani as its intervention community.
Within two years, rotary has built a water facility, school, immunised them for COVID-19, Hepatitis among others.
