A Gavi team has visited the national strategic cold store in Abuja on an inspection review to assess Nigeria’s immunization cold chain as a new mass Covid-19 vaccine campaign is set to begin.
The inspection is part of an accountability framework aimed at ensuring equitable distribution and usage of all vaccines, including Covid-19 vaccines donated to partners.
The visit to the cold store in Abuja was to assess and evaluate storage conditions for vaccines, and the level of their usage.
The delegation also visited some primary health care centers and evaluate if there was value for health care investments over the years.
As part of its mission to save lives and protect people’s health by increasing equitable and sustainable use of vaccines, Gavi has helped vaccinate more than 888 million children in the world’s poorest countries, preventing more than 15 million future deaths.
Gavi is co-leading COVAX, the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator.
This involves coordinating the COVAX Facility, a global risk-sharing mechanism for pooled procurement and equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
