Coalition praises NASS for Reviewing Biosafety Law

A coalition of CSOs on Tuesday commended the National Assembly for considering a bill to review the National Biosafety Management Act to promote food safety in the country.

The organisations include the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) and others.

HOMEF Director, Nnimmo Bassey, in a joint statement, said the move was a huge milestone towards defending the rights of Nigerian citizens to safe food and environment.

According to him, promotion of food safety and security is a mandate that rests not only on the Biosafety Management Agency but on the entire public.

Bassey said that public opinion must be duly considered in decision-making processes concerning genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

He said that Nigeria shares extensive land borders with other countries and GMOs allowed into the country are invariably being introduced to the neighbouring nations without the knowledge of their farmers.

CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, stressed the need for duty bearers to protect the nation’s food, and ignore industrial yield-output paradigms.

Oluwafemi said it was crucial for Nigeria to adopt a more integrated system approach to food and agriculture, saying this would promote local food security and sovereignty.
