IWES held a project coordination meeting in Makurdi, the State Capital of Benue State, with partners for a research project titled “investigation of knowledge, attitudes and practice on menstrual hygiene management among public primary school girls in urban areas in Benue State” which is to be implemented in partnership with Eunice Spring of Life Foundation (ESLF), an organization owned by Her Excellency, the Wife of the Executive Governor of Benue State and Ambassador of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM), Dr Eunice Ortom and Roots Media Initiative.

The project which is hoped to last for 30 days has its primary objective to investigate and understand the range of personal challenges and needs girls have during menstruation in urban primary schools setting in urban areas in Benue State. The primary areas of investigation include; knowledge of menstruation; personal experience with menstruation; behaviours during menstruation and access to MHM facilities in schools.

According to the Principal Investigator (PI) of the study and Executive Director of IWES, Nanen Gangese, the study is significant because it will provide data for effective decision-making by relevant stakeholders, including policy makers and development partners etc. and therefore effectively contribute to data-driven interventions in the State, especially those which are targeted towards enhancing knowledge, attitudes and practices of young girls on menstrual hygiene management while improving their access to MHM facilities in schools, so that they are not left behind to access quality education due to menstruation.
